"Proven by science"
Just saw the following headline: “Homophobia Is Totally Gay, As Proven By Science”.  Now granted it’s from Jezebel, and Gawker isn’t known for its high-quality science reporting.  But this sort of headline pops upway too fucking often.  One study does notproveanything.  It barely begins to prove.  Metastudies, which get less attention, come closer to proving.  They scan a...

The EEOC has decided sex discrimination includes discrimination against trans and gender-nonconforming people! (Actually, the gender-nonconforming were protected already by Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins, but yay for that, too!)  This is officially codifying the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision from December!  Awesomesauce!

Being fat probably saved my cat's life
You see, this is my cat: She usually weighs about 20 pounds, and we barely feed her. She’s been like this for years.  Every so often, the vet would get it in his head she had a thyroid problem, draw blood, and inform us when the results came back that she was, in fact, just plain fat. This fall, we were distracted by our older cat getting sick and dying, and we didn’t notice that...

I was stupid today. I got too relaxed and “oh, yay, BLT sandwich rolls!” about midway into my second, I’m savoring the taste of the lettuce and remember what I’m eating. Lettuce. God damn. I think I caught myself before I ate too much, but still. I fucked up bad. All I need to do is avoid lettuce, and I can’t even do that reliably. I know I can do this most of...

The stupidest thing I've heard so far today →
As always, read the linked article.  People continue to fundamentally misunderstand GMOs.  First off, they’re some of the most heavily regulated products on the market today.  In order to take a GMO from the lab to the table, it needs to be evaluated for safety and environmental impact by the USDA, the FDA, and the EPA.  In comparison, any drug you take has to be approved by only the FDA. ...

I have blood clots.
Hormonal birth control is not for me. I was on it fall 2010. Made me depressed. I was on it these past two months. Made me occasionally hate everyone, and gave me fucking blood clots. It’s a rare side effect. I got it. Whee. What does this mean? three months of fun. (The fun is sarcastic) I get injections of about 1cc of drugs, that burn when injected. I get them twice a day, for...

Had a bit of a fight with my mother this evening. Turns out, she told my grandmother about my blood clot (which I don’t mind), about my factor 5 Leiden gene (which I don’t mind, it might eve effect her), and about my birth control. It was hard to make her understand quite how vulnerable “S. was on birth control, but now she’s making other arrangements because of a blood...
